(Germany) Corona Sorrow Considering mandatory work from home
Homeoffice zur Pflicht?

January 16, 2021

Corona wreck, the severe situation continues all over the world. Meanwhile, in Germany, a temporary "mandatory work from home" debate has emerged in an attempt to curb unstoppable infections. Of course, the target is only occupations that can work from home. This time, I thought about "mandatory work from home" for (PRO) and for (CON).

Pros:

  • Several studies have verified that "mandatory work from home" for a limited time is an effective way to reduce the number of infected people. Example: A study by Professor Fadinger's team at the University of Mannheim, Germany.

  • According to a Hans-Böckler Stiftung survey, 27% of employees will work from home in the spring of 2020 (when the first stage of lockdown in Germany began). Only 14% in the lockdown in November of the same year.

  • The law should basically not deprive companies and employees of their freedom, but it should be implemented if it can reduce the number of infections and deaths by implementing it for a limited time.

  • Examples from other countries (France, Belgium, etc.) also show that mandatory implementation is an effective means.

  • By making it mandatory to work from home, it is possible to prevent the economic downturn from prolonging, and as a result, it will be beneficial to the company.

Opponents:

  • It should not be obligatory when there are many uncertainties, such as whether it is a really effective method or whether there is more to gain than to lose.

  • According to a representative survey by Bitkom, one in two people worked from home between October and November 2020 (including partial work from home), probably targeting people who can work from home.

  • In the same survey, 55% of respondents said they could work from home (same as above). In Belgium, where the obligation was implemented, 43% actually worked from home.

  • Even if it is not legalized, many companies carry out telecommuting suitable for the company.

  • Even if you can work from home, it may not be suitable (including personal circumstances), so the law should not force you to work from home. It will deprive the company and individuals of their freedom.

Work from home to the extent possible, which was forced to start in the middle of the corona disaster. It is a place where opinions can be understood, such as the response differs depending on the company, personal circumstances, etc., who prefer or dislike working from home. What do you guys think?

And when working from home becomes so established, "working from home" is likely to become the theme even in after-corona.
